Important info for pre-riding the course!

Do not try and park at Falling Creek Camp except on the day of the event. One of the best places to park is the Fawn Lake Access Area at DuPont State Forest. This will put you very close to the turn off Green River Road onto Pinnacle Mountain Road. Note that on weekends this parking area is quite busy.

You can also park at Roscos gas station (which is closed on Sundays). This will give you 6.3 miles of flat pavement before hitting the Green River Road gravel.

There are a couple of churches on Green River Road near Falling Creek. Unfortunately due to people littering and not picking up after themselves these churches are no longer available to use for parking. This is a good time to remind everyone that we should always leave an area in better condition than when we arrived or we will lose out.

Falling Creek Pinnacle Punisher

May 8, 2021
9:00 am Start Time
Zirconia, NC

  • Event 3 of 6 in the Southeast Gravel Series

Race into Spring time. The temps are warming up and so are the events. You've spent the first two events riding flatter to rolling terrain. Now it's time to ride our favorite roads around the mountains near DuPont State Forest.
  • Pinnacle Mountain Road!

Years ago Pinnacle Mountain road was something that never saw a vehicle or a bicycle. It borders DuPont, but was avoided on all rides. Now it's a staple of gravel riding in North Carolina; go there on any Saturday and you're bound to run into more cyclists than vehicles
  • Challenging Courses

Start off imeediately climbing up Green River Road, make the sharp turn and continue climbing up Pinnacle. A challenging loop around DuPont State Forest also includes the picturesque climb up Cascade Lake Road. The real challenge? The long course does this loop twice!
  • A Unique Finish Line Approach

May is starting to get hot in the Carolinas. At the end of a long gravel event you may be overheating, dirty, and in need of a shower. We've got you covered! With less than 500 meters to go traverse the Green River before your finish. Bonus style points for riders who clear the river without putting a foot down.
  • Free Food, Free Beer!

Go as hard as you want, and know that a hot meal and a cold refreshing beer will be awaiting you at the finish line. Stick around and cheer on fellow riders who are finishing.

What People are Saying

“ The Sumter Forest Gravel Event brings us through the best gravel roads around. There was no traffic, the course was very challenging, and the food afterwards hit the spot. This event had me mark down every Southeast Gravel event on my calendar.”

The Start Finish venue is located at the base of the Falling Creek Camp in Ziconia, NC. Falling Creek is a summer camp for boys that offers many different types of outdoor activities (including cycling). Our start/finish venue will be in the field at the base of camp. Please make sure you pick up all trash as we want to leave the venue cleaner that when we arrived. You will drive over a narrow wooden bridge to get to the parking, with this there are NO motorhomes allowed (Sprinter vans are ok).

Directions to Start

Camping / Lodging options

There is NO onsite camping the night before the Falling Creek Pinnacle Punisher. Also, due to size contstraints with the wooden covered bridge used to enter the property, there are NO motorhomes allowed on site. Sprinter style campers will fit just fine.
Camping

The closest campground is the Rock Creek Campground. It's about 2 miles to the entrance to Falling Creek Camp. Rates are $40 for a camper, $35 for a tent (cash only). Make reservations by calling the phone number from this page:

Lodging

There are hotels near I-26 on exit 53 which is approximately 10 miles to the start. You can also stay in Hendersonville, which is 12 miles from the start. Hendersonville has a much better restaurant and beer scene than next to the highway, just remember that you need to ride a very hard course the next morning!

Want to have the most fun on a bike AND look good while riding?

The new Southeast Gravel jersey will allow you to do both. The stylish new jersey features a lightweight moisture wicking design. The dots you see on the sleeve? Those are reflective so if you happen to go for a longer ride than you planned your jersey will help keep you visible to vehicles.

Gripper sleeves keep the jersey in place and help you perfect those tan lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a race?

Some people will race the course, some will ride to finish. You are free to go as hard as you want, but the rules of the road apply.

How many rest areas?

The long course will have two rest areas and the short course has one. They are stocked with water, drink mix, and snacks.

If I have a mechanical will you fix it?

This is a self-supported event. This means you are expected to bring tools and parts with you to fix your own mechanical and have the knowledge to fix it. If you have a mechanical that can not be fixed we do have sag support, although there may not be cell service and the support vehicle may be far away.

Is the course marked?

We try to mark the course extremely well. That being said, in every event there are people who rely only on the course markings to guide them and up up off course. It is *extremely* highly recommended to download the gps file we provide.
